Tsubasa presents: HINA HARU MATSUI

Malang- March 7. Yesterday Tsubasa (the centre of education of language and culture of Japanese) held Mini Shibori & Hina at 9am-15pm WIB. The merry going ceremony was continued in the next day, March 8 at 7am-10am.

Some participants took part in Sakura dance, Origami, and the Japanese traditional game. I had a sufficient time to taste the traditional cuisine that almost the same with Indonesian's. The taste was not bad. It was Takoyaki from Osaka, made from Takoyaki flour. The making just like a Lumpur or Merci cake. The ingredient was mixed and then poured into a cast wok that had been warmed up with margarine before. I also bought a green tee ala Japanese that was sold in Japanese needless counter. Each sachet contained one dye tea with a cost Rp. 2000.

There were things that pulled my interest, namely Sakura dance, Kimono and the traditional game. According to Dewi, one of the committee of Tsubasa, the Sakura dance is used to be danced with Japanese women in Japan with Sakura song as the background. This dance includes the hand moves much. The reason is the meaning of it, in spite of a woman but also has to be able to “spread and carry on the hip the wings”, a woman has also able to take part in the life. The personality of a woman must flexible and have wide horizon. This dance is done by holding Sakura branch

Kendama and Daruma Otoshi also need concentration. I tried both. The interesting thing is Daruma Otochi game also has a philosophy that is not less important that make it become the background of the development of Japanese culture. Daruma, that addressed as a doll made from wood is a charm, consist of five parts there are head (of the Daruma doll), and another 4 parts that each in blue, green, yellow, and red. This charm will be given eye if our dream comes true. If another dream has not become true yet, so this pity Daruma will only have one eye, so wanted or not, our another dream or idea must come true if we want our Daruma has two eyes. It seems that the ideas are not choices for Japanese, but a must. I was much admired it made. But sometimes this thing has not become a copious thing, if it has, so you would have seen the high number of suicide that occurs in the Sakura land.

City Line ( The Jembatan Merah in the morning )

At 7.45 I hurried to Jembatan Merah (a name of a place in Surabaya) by angkot (city transportation) K. Coincidently a friend took me to the place of the angkot. I sat in the front seat, and there was only a passenger at that time, it was me. Not long after that, I have arrived in front of Jembatan Merah Plaza that needed a walk to go to the building. It was not too crowded, because at that time around the people still prepare to be in activity. There was the Ibis hotel and a Dutch building inheritance beside, but I did not know what the name of the building was. My sight directed to a Chinese characterize gate that was straight from my position. “It’s been so long”, I thought, I have not taken a walk to the site. Was there something changed?

The name was Kembang Jepun, not a name of a flower I meant, but a road where kya-kya gate stands on. The Pedi cabs driver snatched away, offered the service to me, I said ”no sir, thanks. It’s still morning, I prefer to take a walk in order to be healthy”. What was it that made me have a thought and attracted to go there? Maybe because at that time my account was very limited so it was better for me to take a walk. I wish I had a lot of money, sure I would decide to turn around using Pedi cab and dropped in Jembtan Merah Plaza for shopping until dropping (fuh, what a girl :)

In the edge of the road I saw some people that prepared the merchandise. It was knowledgeable that there were many unsettle merchant. Many things became my intention, that was the vary of trade kind in the area, started from newspaper, spare part shop, boutique and not less interested was the banking business, there ere many bank line in a row that bordered with the both gates. I, then wondered why?

The answer of my question above began to find a way out. When I saw some ethnics that settled in the area -especially the Tionghoa ethnic (as known this ethnic has the important role in the economic matter)-, the big number in quantity of the Dutch building inheritance and the strategic place to trade because it is near of harbour area. Then, I tried to imagine the previous year when this town started crowded and became one of the trade area

about Kembang Jepun

This photograph is very interesting, in it consist of illustration of people can freely walk without fear being crashed, there is a delman (transportation using animal to drag), cars park in the front of the building can also “swing” in the south of the road, but it is no seen the unsettled or traveling merchants. How beautiful. It is different from now on situation. I kept on going until in the end of the gate, until finally trough the east Polres (resort police) of Surabaya in Kapasan road and saw the physic condition of the building until I turned the direction to ITC (kind of dept. store), and Atom market. There were many buildings oriental in style and pagoda analog. It seems that the industry moving direction spread to another road. Then, I had a thought was there the connection with Kembang Jepun? Kembang (ind: flower) is a connotation of something smell good, bloom, coloured and woman. While Jepun in Malay means Japan, was there connection with occupying territory of Japan? Sakura? Japanese woman? The question in my mind was getting passionate along with the blossoming sunrise in the Kapasan area.

The weather was getting hotter and the activities turned significant when the time showed 9.20 am in the morning. The flow of transportations was getting crowded too, until it was difficult to cross. I returned entering kya-kya gate from the reverse direction from the previous. The wriggle of trade started to grow. Many shops had been prepared to sell. Moreover, there were some loading lorries (may be the gross salesman’s) which parked in the north of the road that connects the west and east kya-kya gate. There my ne building that modern in style but the condition was not too good, and the Pedi cab driver ith the Pedi cab that milled about in the road. Whoa, it was a territory that really full of complexity, right..

It was so cool. Even there was a building that the top had a Japanese style but may be it had been changed in function and more complex activity, made the lower part of the building occurred change that is modern style. (I was confused, actually before the theory about postmodern was issued or went public, had somebody thought the layering concept? although implicitly)

There are some things to investigate, the first is a thing connected with space arrangement, which has close connection with the industry moving direction and the society social-economy system. The second is the government policy about this region. There is an effort to make this area become conservative area, but if we come back to the both things above, it will not be easy to make this area become conservative because the human civilization grows that organized by the architecture itself.

I had already arrived in the front of JMP to come back by angkot K. The people had been crowded, there are an economize city bus had been parking in the front of Ibis hotel and offer me to go by. What an ironic scenery, no spaces or even space arbiter feeling between starred hotel and historical as well, with assemble of people that had the economy or business motif (the eccentric language from shopping and offering :), and there was big possibility that they came from different class. The two kind of the contrary. Fuh, wish the green space was wider,..

to be continued,.. (next week:area comparation and solution)
